For destinations where we need to recruit a new local expert, we send a version of this form to get all the information we need. This allows us to create a database of local experts for future work as well.
When we are interested in working with a contractor, we test them for their writing skills and ability to grasp a brief.
Write 420 characters (including spaces) on a neighborhood of your choice in your city (the one you have been contacted for), including the general vibe, type of people who hang out there and points of interest.
Please choose a neighborhood that’s fairly central, with non-commercial points of interest like museums, parks, historic landmarks, etc. You should base your description around these. Don’t namecheck specific restaurants or shops!
Use objective, concrete language only, avoiding empty adjectives like “fabulous” and “top-notch.”
Example 1:
City: London, UK - Neighborhood: Hampstead
Hilltop Hampstead is an affluent residential community long favoured by academics, artists and media figures. Hampstead Heath has meadows, woodland, outdoor swimming ponds and panoramic city views from Parliament Hill. Kenwood House is a neoclassical villa with a renowned collection of Old Master art. Boutique shops and upmarket restaurants occupy the Georgian buildings and alleyways of charming Hampstead Village.
Example 2:
City: Buenos Aires - Neighborhood: Chacarita
Close to the trendy Palermo area, evolving Chacarita is a diverse neighborhood of leafy residential streets and bustling avenues. Tango singer Carlos Gardel is among the famous Argentineans buried in Chacarita Cemetery, a vast necropolis of elaborate tombs. Nearby, old-school parlors dish up pizza by the slice to families, commuters and night owls. Los Andes Park offers playgrounds and a weekend handicrafts market.
The essay should identify the destination and describe what’s most compelling about it: through vibe, specific POIs (shopping, nightlife, outdoor activities, etc.), physical attributes, clientele/typical crowd/habitues.
We're looking for context, vibe. What does it feel like to be there? What can you do? Who will you rub elbows with?
The intro sentence or sentences should answer these questions in a straightforward, descriptive manner, without oversimplifying complex issues: What is it? What is it most known for?
Hit each aspect only once. For example, don’t mention that a neighborhood is famous for its architecture in the second sentence, then list specific examples of it in the fourth sentence – mention both in one sentence.
Always give POIs context to help paint a picture.
E.g. the High Line, an elevated park built atop former railroad tracks.
